Chapter Seventeen
Elijah
Leaning over the sink in Shoshanna's bathroom, I picked up my beard trimmers, noting my tired eyes as I cleaned up my mustache and began to trim down the hair on my chin. A long weekend in New York had made it necessary to spend the night at Shoshanna's and get ready at her place before heading back to Philly.
"You're shaving it off?" Shoshanna asked, appearing in the doorway behind him.
I caught her reflection in the mirror and winked. "It's time, don't you think?"
"I strongly disagree. That beard is damn sexy."
"Yeah, but it's unprofessional. I shouldn't have let it grow this long. It's unruly."
She grunted with a sly smile. "I like it. She might like it. I think you should keep it."
"I'm not shaving my beard because I'm going to see Yves today."
"Yeah, right. And I'm not giving you advice on how to get your ex-girlfriend back because I'm hoping she'll reject you so that you can finally move on."
"Ouch," I muttered with a frown. Shoshanna knew about the meeting today, but I never mentioned how nervous I was about seeing Yves after nearly seven months of being apart. My first instinct was to back out of it. I didn't trust myself around her.
Shoshanna came up behind me and hugged me around the waist. "Keep the beard. It was such a shock to see you looking so... unkempt according to your grooming standards, when I came into your office that day. Maybe she will think you abandoned all your meticulous grooming because you were mourning the relationship."
I grunted. "That's actually kinda what happened."
Shoshanna pressed her lips to the middle of my spine and hugged my waist tighter. I knew I should probably push her away, but a growing neediness in me allowed it. We agreed we shouldn't have sex. There were so many emotions tied up in our interactions right now, and I couldn't be sure if all of it wasn't about loving Mateo. But Shanna was putting the pressure on. Her hands were now a little too familiar. Her kisses searched for intimate places like the lips on my spine right now. They were an invitation. One that I had to turn down--again. It wouldn't be right to use her that way. Talking to Brahm was a better way to handle this. I was glad I'd already made an afternoon appointment.
I gripped the towel wrapped around my waist. "Shanna," I whispered. "I have to get dressed."
She backed away; her eyes dropped to the floor. "Okay, I'll make you some breakfast."
"Coffee will do. Thank you, Shanna."
She nodded and disappeared into the bedroom. I closed the door behind her. Turning back to the mirror, I and stroked my beard, thinking about what Shoshanna said. Maybe I would keep it, but just clean it up a bit more.
